TOPEKA — Former Kansas Congressman Bill Roy of Topeka has died at 88. Both a medical doctor and attorney, Roy represented the 2nd Congressional District in northeastern Kansas from 1971 to 1975. A liberal Democrat, Roy’s challenge to Bob Dole for the U.S. Senate barely failed by a razor-thin margin. Roy remained active in public affairs, writing a column for the Topeka Capital-Journal for several years. Roy received several public accolades, including from Republican Gov. Sam Brownback who said that Roy served the people of Kansas proudly and well and cared deeply for this state.
