OTTAWA – Area Kansas State Extension offices extended today. Anderson County Extension joined the Frontier Extension District today. The district was created by the merger of Franklin and Osage counties’ Extension office. The Miami County and Linn County Extension offices merged to form the Marais des Cygnes Extension District today. The changes had to be approved by the county commissioners and by the state and went into effect today, which is the start of the state’s fiscal year. The districts will each be supervised by a district board and collect a regional tax levy. The extension districts allow pooling of both personnel and resources and allow agents to specialize and provide higher quality, more in‐depth programming and information and reach more people, said Diane Burnett, Marais des Cygnes director. The state Extension Service has been encouraging counties to merge their offices into districts, said Fran Richmond, Frontier director. So far, 45 counties and joined into 16 Extension districts, she said.
