BALDWIN CITY — The Baldwin City planning commission has tabled a plan to build a stripped-down convenience-style Wal-Mart store along U.S. 56. Planners say they want to see a traffic study and asked the Baldwin City Council to review the proposal to see if it fits with the city’s comprehensive plan. The Wal-Mart Corporation seeks to build a Wal-Mart Express and Neighborhood Store on a site north of U.S. 56 and between Eisenhower Road and Washington Street. The proposal has drawn fierce public opposition, with more than hundred people each attending a recent a Baldwin City Council meeting and the planning commission meeting. Nearly a thousand people signed a petition within a week opposing the plan. The company can do a traffic study or appeal the planners’ decision to the city council or drop its plan. Mirroring the continuing economic distress of middle class and lower-income Americans, the company has seen a year-long decline in sales and is backing away from giant Super-Center stores in favor of the smaller stores.
