OTTAWA — The Franklin County Sheriff’s office will join the Kansas Highway Patrol and nearly 150 other law enforcement agencies in paying special attention to traffic violations for Labor Day. Sheriff Jeff Richards said deputies are beginning the Special Traffic Enforcement Program today. The STEP campaign will last for the next two and a half weeks, ending Labor Day, Sept. 1st. Deputies will watch for drunk drivers, seat belt use and other traffic violations, Richards said. The extra overtime for deputies will be paid by a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.
