OTTAWA — Joann Fluke, Ottawa, an activist on disability issues, has asked Franklin County commissioners to expand the number of hours that general transportation buses run each day. Buses run Monday through Friday until 2:30 p.m., which poses problems for many people with disabilities, as well as others, who have regular work hours. The buses, which are large vans with wheelchair lifts, are given to the county’s general transportation agency, because of grants from the Kansas Department of Transportation. However, KDOT also bought the vans for other local agencies, Fluke said. She said many of those agencies are willing to offer their buses to help the county expand service hours. She said that’s what happened when lawrence expanded its bus hours.
