OTTAWA – Ottawa elementary schools hope to get students on the right foot for International Walk to School Day Wednesday morning. Students from Lincoln, Garfield and Eugene Field schools will be encouraged to walk and ride bicycles to school. Mayor Mike Skidmore and City Commissioner Linda reed will tag along with the youthful walkers going to Garfield from 11th and Mulberry. The walking day is designed to rais awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment, Skidmore said. “We hope this builds connections between families, schools and the community,” he said. The event is being organized by the Franklin County Health Department, in cooperation with the city of Ottawa and USD 290.
