BENNINGTON – A central Kansas pilot died as a result of injuries he received when his experimental airplane crashed Sunday afternoon. Delwyn Schmidt, 62, took off from a grass strip at his house near Bennington, the Kansas Highway Patrol said. The highway patrol said he experienced some difficulty during his take off and tried to turn his homebuilt plane back home but lost power. He failed to make an emergency landing. He was taken to Salina Regional Medical Center, where he died early Monday morning.  Schmidt had built and flown several experimental homebuilt aircraft and helicopters.
