OTTAWA — A ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the official start of the U.S. involvement in Vietnam will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The ceremony will be hosted by the General Edward Hand chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 612 and the Ottawa VFW at the VFW post. Although the Air Force and the Navy were bombing in Vietnam, and 25,000 U.S. military advisers were working with South Bietnamese forces, the first American combat unit was a group of 3,500 Marines who landed at Da Nang on March 8, 1965.
