OTTAWA — After four years of work, the Ottawa Police Department has received national accreditation from the Commission on the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies — CALEA.  City manager Richard Nienstedt attended the CALEA award ceremony in Florida.  Ottawa is one of few Kansas law agencies to receive the accreditation and is the smallest police agency in the state.  “This is a compliment to the police department, this is a compliment to the leadership of the police department, this is a compliment to the community of Ottawa,” Nienstedt said.  To get the accredition, the department had to undertake a complete top-to-bottom review of the department and its procedures, he said.  CALEA says the process makes the department more profession, improves, administrative and operational procedures and improves their relationships with their communities by making them more responsive to the public and more accountable.
