HOMEWOOD — A fire destroyed a house in the 2000 block of Indiana Road northeast of Homewood Wednesday afternoon and caused more than $125,000 in damage. The owners reported the fire, and then fled, said county fire marshal Alan Radcliffe. They had just returned from vacation and within a half-hour smelled and saw smoke, he said. The fire was in the ceiling when firefighters arrived, he said. The metal roof on the house complicated efforts to fight the fire by containing the fire and heat to under the roof line and spreading it faster. Most of the interior of the house was a total loss, he said. Williamsburg-Homewood, Pomona, Lincoln-Ottawa-Harrison and Ohio Township rural departments and Ottawa city firefighters battled the blaze for more than two hours. Radcliffe said no cause of the fire has been pinpointed.
