OTTAWA — ECKAN will provide free meals to children in Ottawa and in Anderson County this summer. Beginning Tuesday at noon, meals will be served at ORC’s Don Woodward Center in Ottawa and at Ray Meyer Gym, at 305 N. Oak, Garnett. The Garnett gym is a different location from previous years. Any child age 18 or under are welcome to come to eat. Meals are free. There are no income requirements or registration. The purpose of the program is to ensure children receive adequate nutrition during the summer months when school lunches aren’t available, and children are sometimes caring for themselves while parents work, ECKAN’s Richard Jackson said. Menus will be printed in advance and are based on the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture’s food guide pyramid. The lunches continue through July 29.
