OTTAWA — Work is under way on creating a micro-distillery on the east side of Ottawa.  One of the owners of the proposed Monster Buck Distillery, J.D. Flummerfelt, Lawrence, said he and Daryl Kleitz, Wellsville, are working on the paperwork for the state’s Alcoholic Beverage Control.  Flummerfelt said the plan is to start production on Bennett Road during the last quarter of this year.  Their intent resulted in the city approving changes to the zoning rules allowing microbreweries and microdistilleries.  Two years ago, the legislature approved a bill allowing microdistilleries of up to 60,000 gallons of alcohol per year, adding the law to earlier laws allowing microbreweries and farm wineries.  The laws have spurred a boom in boutique beers, wines and liquors in Kansas.  The microdistillery law requires the alcohol to be sold but consumed away from the site, although free samples may be served at microdistilleries and at special events.
