OTTAWA — A nearly six-hour standoff ended peacefully Friday evening when a suspect eventually came out of the house he was holed up in at Seventh and Walnut in Ottawa. Christopher Fawl, 41, Baldwin City, was booked into the Franklin County jail on suspicion of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and obstruction of justice. Sheriff deputies and police officers surrounded the house about 1:20 p.m. Friday during a search for a suspect wanted for dragging a sheriff’s deputy about 10 to 15 feet with his car earlier in the day. The deputy pulled over the man to ask him some questions with regard to another incident. The deputy asked the subject to shut off the car and step out of the car when he instead took off, dragging the deputy. The deputy wasn’t hurt as a result of the incident, Franklin County Sheriff Jeff Richards said. The man later surrendered. Deputies used a telephone to talk to the man and communication was the key to resolving the standoff peacefully, Richards said.
