OTTAWA – Although it’s been more than a year since a fire in July 2016 closed Keim’s Bakery and Grill in downtown Ottawa, the family has been struggling to reopen it. The Keim family has been in a court fight with their insurance company, Nationwide, who has denied their claim for fire and smoke damage. While the fire was contained to the basement of the building at 304 S. Main, it caused significant damage to the electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems in the building. The case is currently in federal court. The Keims said they have been waiting over 14 months for a solution but have been told not to expect a result any time soon. Until the litigation is complete, the family said they won’t be able to reopen the business because of financial constraints in the restoration process.
