WASHINGTON — Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback faced harsh questioning from members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Wednesday during a confirmation hearing toward his presidential appointment. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., introduced Brownback and called him a long-time champion of religious freedom globally. He added that the governor has sought to ensure that America’s First Freedom is infused into the State Department’s foreign policy. Brownback was pushed on several issues, including Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., who questioned him on his order to rescind an executive order originally issued by Democratic Gov. Kathleeen Sebelius barring discrimination in executive branch agencies against anyone on the basis of sexual orientation. Brownback largely dodged those questions. Instead, he stuck to statements that he was determined to show he would fight for religious freedom for all and that it was a fundamental right to all people.
