OTTAWA — This week’s wet weather has halted the local fall harvest. The corn harvest is about half completed, said Darren Hibdon, Frontier Extension District agriculture and natural resources agent. Many yields have been well above the average for Franklin County, with some yields of 140 to 170 bushels per acre reported, he said. Normally, 140 bushels are considered very good. Farmers had also started test-cutting soybeans, he said. When fields dry out, farmers will leave the corn and concentrate on harvesting soybeans, he said. Prices for beans are better, and mature beans don’t last as long while standing in fields. He predicted that soybeans will also see some high-yield harvests. However, farmers will need some big yields to offset soft prices for fall grains, he said.
