MARYSVILLE — The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the Saturday afternoon escape of two inmates from the Marshall County jail in Marysville. Inmates started a fire in a cell, causing smoke to fill the jail and two inmates, Jeffrey Guenther, 46; and Matson Hatfield, 30; forced their way through the jail, grabbed two shotguns and then left the jail and ran into the sheriff’s office parking lot, the KBI said. They are accused of stealing a civilian county employee’s pickup truck at gunpoint, and firing at a Marysville Fire Department truck. A Marysville police officer fired at Guenther in the truck. Meanwhile, Hatfield fled on foot to a home near the jail, and fired shots toward a man standing in front of the residence. Hatfield knew the residents of the home. A short time later, Hatfield surrendered to a Marysville police officer. Guenther fled the area in the stolen pickup and headed north on K-77, and into Nebraska. He was pursued by Marysville police until he crashed and rolled the truck and was arrested in rural Gage County, Neb. No one was injured during or after the escape. The remaining Marshall County jail inmates were transferred to the Washington County jail.
