TOPEKA — Things are looking up for Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback. At one time, Brownback was the most unpopular governor in the U.S. Now he’s up to the third least popular governor. A survey of voter approval ratings by the website Morning consult shows that last year, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, whose term has been marked by scandals, replaced Brownback as the most unpopular governor. This week, Brownback moved up, thanks to Democratic Gov. Dan Malloy of Connecticut. Malloy, who had compiled a mildly-liberal record, surprised and infuriated most voters by signing an austerity budget that makes steep cuts in state spending. Malloy has announced he won’t run for re-election. Brownback awaiting confirmation as President Trump’s special ambassador for religious freedom. His nomination passed a Senate committee but Senate Democrats has delayed his confirmation because of gubernatorial record on gay and lesbian issues.
