OTTAWA — Ice skating in Forest Park is back. The city parks crew flooded the area west of the horseshoe pit in to create an outdoor ice skating rink. The deepest part of the area flooded is approximately 12 inches deep. With the subzero temperatures over the weekend the water has now frozen and is safe for the public to use for ice skating. “Evidently, they used to do that in that part of the park,” said city public works director Michael Haeffele. “The last several years, we’ haven’t had enough cold temperatures. With the recent cold snap it was only right that we do it.” The rink is temporary and will be used as long as the weather keeps the ice frozen. The rink will close when the ice is no longer safe, he said. This may only last a few days, but it’s an excellent addition to park and outdoor recreation activities, he said.
