Miami County-There will soon be more speed limit signs on gravel roads in Miami County. According to the Miami County Republic, Miami County road and bridge director J.R. McMahon says many zones in the county have already received the signs. Crews are getting ready to put up signs south of Louisburg and south east of Paola. Speed limit signs will be either 35, 40, or 45 miles per hour.
According to Kansas law, gravel roads have a speed limit of 55 miles per hour but counties have the option to reduce those speeds. Miami County was one of only a few counties that did not have speed limit signs on gravel roads.
County officials began researching the issue by conducting speed studies at a variety of different gravel road locations throughout the county. Most of the studies revealed that, even with a speed limit of 55 mph, motorists routinely drive between 35 mph and 45 mph on gravel roads.
According to The Republic, most of the new signs that will be installed in the next four regions will be 35 mph, but there are a few exceptions. A stretch of Rockville Road from 359th Street to 303rd Street will be 40 mph, and a stretch of Mission Belleview Road from 359th Street to Kansas Highway 68 will be 45 mph.
