OTTAWA- A 40 year old Ottawa man suffered injuries Wednesday night July 4th in a fireworks accident. Emergency crews were called to the 400 block of south Sycamore on a report of an injury due to fireworks. Residents in the area reported hearing a loud boom then sirens and emergency personnel arriving at the scene.
Assistant chief of police Adam Weingartner says the fireworks were homemade and the man had altered the original design. He emphasizes that the risk of injury to a person or someone around them is too great and no one should alter fireworks.
The man was transported to Overland Park Regional Hospital for treatment of the injuries and according to reports went through some extensive surgery to repair the damage to his leg and knee. He has not been identified. KOFO will keep you updated as more details become available.
