People opposed to a wind energy test tower proposed east of Garnett were successful in defeating the effort of a Houston company to build the tower last year. However, Linn County Commissioners have approved a special use permit to put a test tower near Blue Mound. They hope to find out if the area gets enough wind to justify constructing a wind farm there. According to the Linn County news, Wind Development Manager Garret Ketchen of a German based company told Linn County officials they would build the test tower, but they would not build the wind farm without public support. Eastern Kansas has become increasingly popular for wind farm development after a project near Waverly in 2014.
