The drought conditions this spring and summer have led to a shortage of forage for cattle.  Cattlemen had to feed hay longer into the winter and there was little production this summer.  Frontier Extension District Agent Rod Schaub says more silage has been cut in the district this year than he can remember ever being cut.  He also says there is one source of silage that is sometimes forgotten, fescue pastures.  There is one thing that needs to be done to assure good growth in the fall.

He adds that one-third of fescue production happens in the fall due to weather changes.  If you have any questions on how to stock up on fescue, give him a call at the extension office in Lyndon.
