Republican Kris Kobach favors having a private company rebuild and operate the state mental hospital in Osawatomie while his main rivals in the governor’s race are against it. Kansas News Service Roger Heaton has more:
Kobach says the state could expand the number of beds, but they have not. He believes it is something that the state could do right away. Kelly says that Osawatomie and the other mental health facility in Larned are too far away from people. She believes people need to be receiving services in their own communities near family and work. Independent candidate Greg Orman agreed. He says if people get mental health care in their own communities, they have their support networks around them, and ultimately they get better faster.
