The treatment or women— or perhaps more accurately the mistreatment of women- has historically been based on stereotypes and other factors. The Chautauqua movement that started in the late 1800’s actually was an important trend that pushed for women’s right to vote and other rights…. Sarah Bell is a doctoral candidate at the University of Kansas and was the featured speakers at the annual meeting of the Franklin County historical society… She says some men were enlightened, but still had their hang-ups about women.

Bell says the Chautauqua movement also  helped spur the nation towards it’s experiment with prohibition.
