Debbie Harker knew something was not right. Always active and full of energy, she felt, as she says, “Weird.” She was originally diagnosed as diabetic, but after a year of not feeling better, maybe worse, she changed doctors. That led to a diagnosis of celiac disease and kidney disease. In March of last year, she was at stage three, but by November, it had progressed to stage 5. The big news, she needed a kidney transplant. With the transplant list is incredibly long, she prepared for and started dialysis. Then in stepped her daughter, Casey Flory.
That was April 3rd, less than three weeks ago, the two were on the operation table at KU medical center, Casey donating a kidney to her mother. The two are home recovering, a long process, but miraculous to some degree. Deb is thankful and says, “Casey had one stipulation to giving her the kidney, and she has a message for everyone.”
Debbie’s journey to the kidney transplant has been covered by inside edition and will air soon on Good Morning America. You can check out the video on Kofo’s Facebook page.
