The Special Olympics Kansas Flame of Hope will make its way to Ottawa this morning. Law enforcement will be escorting the torch from Lawrence and stop at Kalmar Industries for a presentation about 11:30a.m. Tomorrow morning, law enforcement officers and Special Olympics athletes will come together to carry the flame through Ottawa. The Torch Run starts at 8:30a.m. in the Kansas State Bank parking lot and will proceed through downtown. Through Ottawa and on to Emporia on old 50 highway. Ottawa police community service officer, Larabe Alexander will be one of the officers involved in the local run. He has participated in the torch run and Special Olympics since 2007. He says, “It’s a very special event.”
He added, “The Flame of Hope started as a spark and has evolved into a roaring flame and he is proud to serve as guardian of the flame. Starting in Pittsburg in April, the flame has traveled over 11 hundred miles across Kansas on its way to the Special Olympics Kansas 50th summer games opening ceremony Friday at maize high school.
