More details have emerged about the man who was rescued from flood waters near Hillsdale Lake Saturday night. 88-year-old Leo Peters was looking for a highway to get to Witchita, but a wrong turn sent him down a road leading to the flood Antioch boat ramp parking area. Peters couldn’t describe where he was but dispatch supervisor Alison Ray was able to ping Peters’ phone to get a general location, and the dispatcher and sheriff’s officers then devised a plan to locate his exact location. All of the units but one turned off their sirens, and Ray asked Peters to tell her when he heard the sirens and when they were getting closer. Captian Matthew Kelly and Sargent Mitchel Talley waded about 100 yards out, opened the door and walked him to safety.
Yesterday, Peters personally thanked the rescuers, Peters says he is thankful for all of the help he has received, and although he will be returning home in a different car, he’s just happy to be returning home at all.
