We hear a lot about blue-green algae warnings for local lakes and officials warn us not to come in contact with water in these lakes or let our pets drink the water or eat the algae. What exactly are the health effects? K-State toxicologist Steve Ensley says, “The toxins produced can be deadly.”

He adds, “The algae aren’t actually blue-green, it can be a mixture of colors that may look like paint in the water.”
