When former Ottawa Police Officer Steven Burkhart was charged with battery and criminal threat, County Attorney Brandon Jones had a dilemma. Though not a good friend of Burkhart’s, the two did have a casual acquaintance. They had both played on the same law enforcement basketball team and we’re in the same Fantasy Football League. Jones decided to avoid any appearance of bias, he needed to ask a special prosecutor to prosecute the case. He explains the situation.
Miami County Attorney, Elizabeth Sweeny Reeder is the special prosecutor in the case. Burkhart is scheduled for the formal arraignment of the charges a week from today at 1:30.
