Franklin County is not getting nearly as much property tax revenue from commercial properties as they think they should, but the county is lucky compared to other areas. County Administrator Derek Brown says, “It’s a perplexing problem.”
The dark store theory Brown referred to is a legal argument that large commercial properties should be considered as vacant for tax purpose, which means, of course, a big reduction in property values. Brown says, “It’ll probably take legislation to straighten out the situation.”
