Garnett voters have chosen against adding two city commissioners to the city’s governing body in a very decisive manner. According to results of a mail ballot election just released by the Anderson County Clerk’s office, unofficial results show out of 779 total votes cast, 285 were in favor of the change and 494 against. More than 400 of the 2,287 ballots mailed were returned as undelivered. The vote reflected 34% of the ballots distributed. The results won’t be finalized until the election canvass on Monday. If the vote stands, the result is a reversal of the advisory vote in November of last year where voters said they wanted the expansion to take place. However, in that election, only 10% of the registered voters actually voted. That number sparked the debate with commissioners. This ballot was forced by a petition effort organized by commissioner Jody Cole opposing a plan by commissioners Bridgette Brecheisen-Huss and Greg Gwin to adopt the change.
