Ottawa University awarded several major alumni awards this past weekend at the OU Alumni Awards Banquet. One of those went to a person born and raised right here in Ottawa. Lauri Tyner, was presented the recent alumni award. Tyner graduated OU with a degree in elementary education and then got her Masters in curriculum and instruction. She is a kindergarten teacher at Central Heights and is known for her innovative teaching styles. She says, the goal is to live the OU motto: live a significant life, and she strives to do that by following one particular scripture.
She says her inspiration to be a teacher came from her neighbors daughter who was born with Spina Bifida. It was her moment of humbleness and she realized she was blessed to have everything she had. Last year, she organized a special dance with the Central Heights Dance Team, led by two students with Spina Bifida in an effort to raise money for handicap accessible playground equipment at the school.
