The big rains that hit on August 1, up to 12 inches of rain in just a few hours, overwhelmed the pumping system around the levee. The area around the intersection of Keokuk and Main quickly began filling with water and the resulting flooding caused damage to many businesses in the area. The capabilities of the pumps on the levee became a concern.
Public Works Director Michael Haeffle told City Commissioners that he is applying for a grant to have the pumps looked at.
He says he has applied for a hazard mitigation grant through the state to help evaluate the pumps.
