The 2019 Veteran’s Day celebration in Ottawa had some tremendous highs over the weekend. The parade on Saturday was billed the second largest in the state of Kansas. One big entry in the parade was the “Vettes for Vets” organization that had 76 incredibly beautiful Corvettes from all eras roar down Main Street. The battle reenactments in Forest Park Saturday afternoon were very well attended. One highlight of the event was the addition of pyrotechnics to make to scene even more realistic. Spectators could actually feel the heat from some of the fiery explosions. Reenactment coordinators say they are planning a bigger and better show next year.
The flag retirement ceremony at the end of day Saturday brought a somber reminder of the sacrifice our country has gone through to maintain the flag. If you still haven’t seen the display in City Park, it’s not too late. The hundreds flags, the jeep and soldiers and the field of crosses, one cross for each of the 197 Franklin County men that have given their lives for our country will be on display for the next couple weeks.
