The Wellsville community lost a local legend Monday, Jim Wright, longtime coach and teacher at Wellsville High School passed away. He was 82-years-old. Jim was born and bred in Wellsville, graduating from Wellsville High School in 1955. He went to Ottawa University and graduated with a degree in education. He began his teaching career in Wellsville in 1960 and taught for 39 years. He was head track coach of the year in 1988. Because of the countless hours spent maintaining the grounds and the track facility, the facility at Wellsville High was named in his honor, Jim Wright track in 1999. He was inducted into the Wellsville Hall of Fame in 2006.
Former students and staff members say that Wright brought Wellsville High Student through troubled times in the 1960s and instilled a sense of pride, honor, and respect in the students he taught and coached throughout the years, as well as fellow teachers, coaches, and referees.
The family will receive visitors from 5 to 8 tomorrow at the Wellsville Baptist Church, services will be Saturday afternoon at 2 at the church.
