A new kind of sport is quickly rising in popularity, but this one doesn’t involve running, jumping, or throwing a ball. In fact, you don’t even have to leave your seat. Competitive gaming, also known as E-Sports, is expected to reach 84 million U.S. viewers by 2021. Ottawa University got a jump start on most colleges in the area. They started their E-Sports program this semester and build a state of the art facility for the program. It’s a multipurpose room that can be used for gaming, spectating and other activities. OU reports that 148 applications have been received from high schoolers interested in the program. The university of Kansas recently announced it will have its own varsity E-Sports team in place by January. Other Kansas schools, like Barton Community College, expect to have their own E-Sports teams in place sometime next year.
