A family of seven is thankful there wasn’t school yesterday, it may have saved their lives. A fire early yesterday morning at 832 North Main displaced the family, but they are all alive. The call came in shortly before 3 and when firefighters arrived, there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the house, which quickly spread to the attic. Fire crews were able to knock the fire out after about an hour. There were no working smoke detectors in the house and Ottawa Fire Chief Tim Mathias says the outcome could have been much worse.
There were no injuries reported in the fire. Mathias emphasized the importance of having smoke detectors in your home. They are available free of charge at the Ottawa Fire Department. He says they will even come out and install them for you.
