One of the big questions during this Kansas Legislative Session is transparency, particularly when it comes to your property tax.  Two bills in the Legislature address this.  The first one prevents the valuation of a home from increasing just because you do an improvement to it.  The second, being used by several states, makes local government more accountable when it comes to increasing property taxes.  State Senator, Caryn Tyson, says if local government wants to bring in more money that’s fine, but they can’t blame it on Topeka.

Local governments would then have to have a public vote to increase property tax, instead of just letting it happen when valuations go up.  Tyson was speaking at the legislative coffee held Saturday morning in Ottawa
