The Garnett City Commission is focused on new housing in the area for the upcoming year. Earlier this month the Commission moved toward a feasibility study to determine possible expansion of Senior Housing. Commissioner, Jody Cole, says the city’s Housing Authority had been reluctant to pursue that. City Manager, Chris Weiner, says he would like to have the study done but not only for Senior Housing but also include a broader focus that could include more general housing data for the Community, with hopes to use it to grow additional housing locally for various age groups. He says if strong enough data was obtained, it might interest private developers and remove the City from the equation.
But, Mayor Greg Gwin, says the lead on an expansion investigation should be taken by the Housing Authority rather than the City. Commissioners agreed to direct Weiner to approach the Housing Authority about its interest in pursuing the feasibility study. The market for Senior Housing in the U. S. as whole is expected to double over the newx two decades, as Baby Boomers look for options that accommodate their changing lifestyles.
