A man, who was acquitted on felony murder and drug distribution charges in the death of Heather Briggs in 2017, has been arrested and charged with possessing methamphetamine and other paraphernalia. Paola police responded to Casey’s General Store on a call of suspicious activity and seized meth and other drug related items. Thirty one year old Kevin Stevens was booked into the Miami County Jail and will remain there until a Bond Hearing on Thursday morning at the Miami County Courthouse.
Stevens, who was present during a late-night drug-deal-gone-bad that resulted in the death of Briggs, was in jail for more that a year before being found not guilty. Seven people were arrested and charged in the case. Five accepted plea deals, but Stevens and Michael Pearce, pleaded not guilty. Stevens Attorney said at the time Stevens was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and was actually asleep in the vehicle at the start of the drug deal. Briggs was run over and killed during the ordeal. Pearce was found guilty of felony murder and distribution of meth and sentenced to life in prison without parole for at least 25 years.
