Ottawa Police Department will conduct an “Enforcement Campaign” near Ottawa High School.
Beginning Monday, they are joining other Law Enforcement Agencies in Kansas, Missouri an Oklahoma with increased enforcement near High Schools to raise awareness on roadway safety. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens 15-18 years old in the United States, ahead of all other types of injury, disease or violence.
Sargent Casey Gilmore of the Ottawa Police Department says that even one teen death is unacceptable and the Ottawa PD asks that everyone slow down and be more attentive by putting their phone away or turning it off completely and always remember to buckle up.
Officers will issue citations to any one who refuses to obey the traffic laws, whether it is for speeding, texting or failing to buckle up. Parents are encouraged to remind teen drivers that driving is a privilege not a right, and encourage them to learn the importance of driving safely.
