The Franklin County Treasurers Office has been made aware of a phone scam in a neighboring county, where someone received a call from a county phone number, claiming to be collecting taxes on behalf of the County.  The taxpayer had recently received their tax notice and the amount they were asked to pay lined up with what they were suppose to pay.  The taxpayer was told they had 30 minutes to pay the outstanding amount over the phone or law enforcement would arrive at their house to arrest them.  In a panic they gave them their bank information.

Franklin County Treasurer Jody Edwards wants everyone to know that while the Franklin County Treasurer’s office may call with questions or concerns, they will NEVER attempt to collect payment over the phone.

After realizing the mistake, the person contacted the County Treasurer and the bank.  The transaction showed up as a payment to National Management.  If you receive such a call, hang up, call the Franklin County Treasurers Office, and the Police.  Again the Treasurers Office assures they will never attempt to collect over the phone and will never threaten a taxpayer with arrest or legal action regarding a tax issue.
