Good news for the development of the trail system in and around the Ottawa area.
Kansas Department of Transportation has awarded Baldwin City with a transportation alternatives grant of totaling just over 1 million dollars to construct a ten-foot wide concrete shared-use path including amenities within Midland Railway’s Property. The trail will start south of highway 56 and proceed south to the historic Santa Fe Depot. As part of the funding of this grant, KDOT will pay 80% and the city will pay 20% of the construction costs. Construction is planned to start in 2021-22. This half mile trail segment is the first phase of the maple leaf trail that will proceed south to Ottawa. The remainder of the trail is in the early planning stage.
