With severe weather coming up, Governor Laura Kelly wants Kansans to be prepared. She will sign a proclamation declaring next week as severe weather awareness week. Emergency officials from around the state, along with Fred the preparedness dog, will join Kelly for the event.

The National Weather Service will conduct a tornado drill at 10 Tuesday morning. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the drill by practicing seeking secure, safe shelter from a tornado. This test will be broadcast over NOAA all hazards weather radio and local television and radio stations, including KOFO.  Officials in Ottawa say the tornado sirens will sound and all area residents, businesses, and schools are urged to treat the drill as if it were an actual tornado warning. Kansas had 89 tornadoes last year and a few struck around this area, including an F4, mile wide tornado that crossed southern Douglas county on May 28th, causing major damage. The month of May accounted for 56 of the 89 tornadoes in Kansas last year.
