It is “Severe Weather Awareness Week”  in Kansas and one thing a lot of people don’t think about is lightning.  Lightning strikes the United States 25 million times a year, nearly 47 times a minute, killing 47 people each year, and injuring hundreds more.  Many of these deaths and injuries are preventable.  National Weather Service Meteorologist, John Woynick, says it can strike even if the storm is not to the area yet:

Each bol of lightning is hotter than the sun and can reach 50 thousand degrees.  A good rule of thumb to remember is:  when thunder roars, go indoors.
