If you have done much traveling across the area the past few weeks, particularly in the Flint Hills area, you know we are nearing the middle of burn season. Prescribed buring is quite an amazing site, especiallly at night. Why is it done? It manages and preserves the ecosystem of the Tallgrass Prairie, turning dry overgrowth into new enriched soil.
There can be some issues during this time. Smoke can affect the air quility in downwind areas. If you are in these areas, try to limit or avoid strenous outdoor activities. People wth respiratory or heart related issues should remain indoors. Keep your windows and doors closed and use an air filter on your air conditioner.
Ranchers and land managers try to spread out the burns to lessen the impact they have on air quality.
