We all know the issues facing areas of our country hardest hit by COVID-19. We know the stories that come out of New York City and other areas. But, what about other areas of the world? Many former Ottawans live in areas greatly affected by corona virus. Former Ottawan, Paul Hemmerla is living in Ecuador. He says the situation there is dire, especially on the coast in the largest city, Guayaquil. He says the city has been the epicenter of COVID-19 in Latin America. Hemmerla says there is a strict stay at home order, and residents are required by law to wear a mask at all times. Fines for not wearing one start at 400 dollars, one months salary there, that fine doubles each time you are caught. Even though there are only 388 official deaths from the virus, tele sur tv estimates that number could be 10 time higher.
