Paola firefighters encountered a scene they dred when they arrived at a house fire at 403 Pankashaw Street Wednesday morning. Several people were trapped in the building when fire broke out inside a multifamily housing unit. Paola fire chief Andy Martin says when firefighters arrived on the scene flames were shooting out of the residence. There were only two reported injuries. The first was to a person who suffered smoke inhalation and a broken leg after jumping from a second-floor window. The other was a police officer who was treated for smoke inhalation.
Officials say 8 people were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by the American red cross. The Louisburg and Osawatomie fire department assisted with the fire.
