Ottawa native and former NASA Astronaut, Steve Hawley, gave a virtual presentation about the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope this weekend.  He was part of the Space Shuttle Crew that took the telescope to orbit in 1990.

Hawley says he never imagined getting to fly three shuttle missions, including two connected to the Hubble Project.  He says it all started in 1977 as he was finishing up Grad School and he saw an ad from NASA about hiring astronauts for the new Space Shuttle Program.

Hawley says while Hubble had some problems at the beginning, Hawley says it was a great scientific achievement.

The United States will launch its first manned flight into space in nine years, this afternoon.  Space X Falcon 9 will launch from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying two astronauts.  They will dock with the International Space Station.  You can watch the launch live today.  Follow the link posted on KOFO’s Facebook page.
